My work is fundamentally grounded in play, storytelling, and an exploration of meta-narrative through writing and art making, which often feel one and the same to me. Oil paint’s long drying time allows – and sometimes forces – me to step back, read over, and revise compositions, or, when dried, show outlines of previous drafts that have been painted over. At times, this waiting with and revisiting work also inspires future pieces. Rather than always creating and conforming paintings to a pre-written story, existing compositions, imagery, palettes, materials, and characters are recycled and rewritten into new work.
Accompanying objects range from being found to sculpted facsimiles whose authenticity is questioned; some through being covered in the same dreamy palette as my paintings, and others through pairing the genuine with the imitation. Astro-turf on top of real soil, a foam bottle next to a glass one, a piece of paper on a constructed clipboard; these combinations raise the metaphysical question of what actually determines what something is. Is it material composition? What we see? The object’s usability or intent? What is the minimum amount of information or transformation needed for one thing to be recognizable or become something else entirely?
